Following is the inventory of Rauphe’s goodes and chattels. It reveals a middling 16th C craftsman. Local yeomen would have probably lived in a similar sized house but their assets would have been worth more—Rauphe’s were worth c £15. It had more rooms than many houses in the town but we do not know how large they were:

  • The house had a second floor over both hall and workshop—the latter probably used for storage or an apprentice—an inner chamber, a back chamber and a kitchen—perhaps a separate building.
  • He had painted clothes—imitation tapestries—in the rooms, some of the beds were of feather and not flock and utensils were brass, but there was no silver.
  • The back house could have been a lean-to or a separate building.
