1. William Brocket and Barbara BROWN

There was only the one Broket family in 19th C Lesmahagow—that of William (son of James and Jean WILSON) and Barbara BROWN, married 9 Dec 1821 Lanark. William’s only brother died unmarried. Two of their daughters were the last Brockets of Lesmahagow.

William was chr 23 Sep 1791, Lesmahagow.1 At the time of the 1821 census of Lesmahagow the family was living in Lanark—only William’s sister Christian, married to James TUDHOPE, was recorded in Lesmahagow. She and James were part of a joint application by Lesmahagow parishioners for emigration to Upper Canada (Lake Simco?) in 1831.2 A William Brocket, single, also applied. He may well have been the William b 4 May, bap 14 Jun 1817 Lanark, illegitimate son of Jean GIBSON and this William of Lesmahagow, senior, before he married Barbara BROWN.

Although Netherfauldhouse wasn’t sold till 1871, William farmed at nearby Bellshole/Bellieshole from at least 1841 till his death there 18 Oct 1874, aged 83, of disease of liver and dyspepsia some years.3 Will: Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories 2/12/1874. Barbara died 1881 in Lesmahagow. Children:
