Broket Immigrants to N America 20th C

William, Bertie and Frederick Brockett 1908

These three siblings, from the youngest of George and Caroline Hilda HART’s 9 children, were sent to Canada as ‘Home children’ through the British Child Emigration Scheme. From 1870 to 1936 this Scheme sent many thousands of young people to Canada where many were adopted for farm labour and stripped of any identity or family. Caroline had died in 1905 aged 39 and George in 1908 aged 41. William left in May, Bertie and Frederick in October.5 All three enlisted in World War 1.

William, b 1 June 1894, at 3 Warwick Row, Boxley Rd, Maidstone.6 Sent to Canada 1908 aged 14 as a ‘home child’, part of a group of children travelling together on SS Dominion, departed Liverpool 21 May 1908, arrived Quebec 31 May 1908, under the auspices of Dr Barnardo’s, destination Toronto Ontario. Signed up for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force 29 Sep 1915, b 1 June 1895, Maidstone, Kent, unm, height 5ft 5in, complexion fair, eyes blue, hair brown, C of E, Trade: Farmer, next of kin Bert Brockett of Udora, Ontario. He had served one year in the 33rd Regiment.

Bertie, b 1897, Maidstone.7 Sent to Canada 1908 aged 11 as a ‘home child’, with brother Frederick as part of a group of children travelling together on SS Dominion, departed Liverpool 8 Oct 1908, arrived Quebec 19 Oct 1908, under the auspices of Dr Barnardo’s, destination Toronto Ontario. Signed up for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force 28 Dec 1915, address Udora, Ontario, b 11 Aug 1897, Maidstone, Kent, unm, height 5ft 5in, complexion reddish, eyes brown, hair auburn, Methodist, Trade Farmer, next of kin Walter WANES, friend, of Udora, Ontario.

Frederick, b 1899, Wandsworth District.8 Sent to Canada 1908 aged 9 as a ‘home child’, with brother Bertie as part of a group of children travelling together on SS Dominion, departed Liverpool 8 Oct 1908, arrived Quebec 19 Oct 1908, under the auspices of Dr Barnardo’s, destination Toronto Ontario. Signed up for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force 2 Dec 1915, as Frederick Edward, address Uxbridge, Ontario, b West Sandling, Kent, unm, height 5ft 2in, complexion fair, eyes blue, hair light brown, Methodist, Trade Farmer Labourer, next of kin sister Elizabeth, c/o Mrs Burns, Cannington, Ontario; but he said he was two years older than he was—giving his date of birth as 11 Jul 1897—to make him 18 [and 4 months].

A couple of years later in 1910, their sister Elizabeth was also sent across and then in 1913 brother Albert Edward.9

John Brockett 1909

John Brockett, Scotch, aged 22, ie b c 1887, single, arrived Ellis Island on the California from Glasgow May 3, 1909, last residence Scotstown, Scotland, b Hardgate.10 Was he:

  1. John b 1886? His family lived in Faifley in 1901, very near Hardgate, but he was married in 1908 and his wife bore him children in Scotland in 1908 and 1910.
  2. John b 1891? He was in Scotland in 1911 and married there in 1914.

Edwin and Olive Brockett 1910

5th son of Thomas and Mary Ann Brockett of the Cambridgeshire Mordens clan, Edwin Wilford was born 4 Sep 1880 in Therfield, Herts, England.11 He married Olive Fanny IZZARD 12 Jun 1905 in Hitchin, Herts, and they immigrated to the States in 1910, settling in Michigan, where they lived in Melvindale, Livonia and then Harrison. In 1970 they had 6 children living, 25 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren—for details about Edwin, Olive and their descendants, see the separate page. Edwin died Jan 1973 in Lincoln Park, Michigan.12 Olive died there 11 Sep 1974.13

Elizabeth Brockett 1910

The 4th of George and Caroline Hilda HART’s youngest children to be sent to Canada as ‘home children’ through the British Child Emigration Scheme, sister of William, Bertie and Frederick.

May Elizabeth, b 23 May 1901, Wandsworth District.14 Recorded as Mary Elizabeth in the GRO. Sent to Canada, aged 8, part of a group of children travelling together on SS Tunisian, departed Liverpool 28 Jul 1910, arrived Quebec 5 Aug 1910, under the auspices of Dr Barnardo’s, destination Toronto Ontario.

John and Jeanie Brockett 1911

John Brockett, Scotch, aged 38, b Glasgow, ie c 1873, 5ft 7in, blue eyes, visited Washington 1910, married, arrived Ellis Island on the Columbia from Glasgow 6 Nov 1911, last residence Glasgow.15 Also on the Columbia was his wife Jeanie Brockett, Scotch, aged 36, ie b c 1875, Glasgow. Two couples are possible:

  1. John and Jeanie WILCOX married 1897, no further record known.
  2. John H and Jeanie WATSON married 1903, but they had 3 sons and were back in Scotland by 1918 at the latest.

Albert Edward Brockitt 1913

The 5th and youngest of George and Caroline Hilda HART’s children to be sent to Canada as ‘home children’ through the British Child Emigration Scheme, brother of William, Bertie and Frederick. Albert Edward, b 9 May 1903, Wandsworth District.16 Sent to Canada, aged 9 [surname Brockitt], part of a group of children travelling together on SS Corinthian, departed London 13 Mar 1913, arrived Saint John, New Brunswick 30 March 1913, under the auspices of Dr Barnardo’s, destination Toronto Ontario.17

Andrew Alexander Dewar Brockatt 1913

Andrew Alexander Dewar Brockatt arrived from Liverpool 27 Jun 1913 on the Mauretania and again 26 Jun 1914 on the Aquitania. He gave his age as 49 and 50 respectively, ie b c 1864, his marital status as single and last place of residence London.18

William Brockett of Carnwath pre 1917

William of Carnwath emigrated to Canada before 1917. He was recorded arriving Ellis Island 6 Mar 1917 on the Carmania from Liverpool: William Brockett, Scotch, aged 24, Single, last residence Edmonton, Alberta, 5ft 9½in, grey eyes, b Carnwath.19

Hugh Brockett 1920

Hugh Brockett, Scotch, aged 28, ie b c 1892, Single, arrived Ellis Island on the Columbia from Glasgow 9 Nov 1920, last residence Clydebank, Scotland.20 This was Hugh McLuskie, who emigrated later to Australia 4 Dec 1950.21

Frederick Brockett 1923

Frederick S Brockett, Carpenter, 5ft 10in, wt 165 lbs, English, aged 25, ie b c 1898, arrived Ellis Island on the City of Evansville 16 Jun 1923.22 Probably Frederick Stanley b 1898 Hartlepool, but who returned to marry 1926.

Robert Crawford Brockett 1923

Robert Crawford Brockett, Scotch, aged 19 , ie b c 1904, Single, 5ft 8in, grey eyes, arrived Ellis Island on the Columbia from Glasgow 1 Aug 1923, last residence Glasgow; mother paid passage; uncle Frederick Young in Tacony Pennsylvania.23 This was Robert Crawford, s/o James McFarlane s/o John Wilson. He must have returned to Scotland to marry 1930, and later die 1957.

Thomas Brockett 1924

Thomas Brockett, English, aged 27, ie b c 1897, arrived Ellis Island on the Franconia from Liverpool 27 May 1924, Night Watchman, 5ft 6in, 142 lbs.24 The General Register Office for England and Wales recorded a Thomas b 1887 and the next 1907. Was his age recorded correctly? Or was he perhaps from Scotland? Thomas Young, 1897 Bridgeton Glasgow West, died 1915. The Thomas b 1894 Bridgeton died 1917 or 1940.

Leslie P Brockett 1930

Leslie P, aged 23, nationality NZ, arrived 22 May 1930 Vancouver, British Columbia on the ship Oarangi, Canadian Australian R.M.25 Leslie was b Oct 8 1906 Christchurch ,26 where he returned and married 1947 and had children.

Miriam R Brockett 1930

Miriam R, aged 24, nationality English, arrived 22 Jun 1930 Quebec, on the ship Ascania, Cunard.27 Born 1906 Brentford London. She returned to England, married 1938, and died 1952.28

Robert F Brocket 1959

Robert F, b 1935 Carnwath, died in Canada 13 Apr 1959.29
