Crest - The Broket Archive

Crest and heraldic helmet of Sir John II

A stag lodged proper, gorged with a gold ducal or crest coronet
Copied and painted by Henry Gray of Hatfield 2004
from Sir John II’s funeral certificate of 1598.1.
See also the tabard and gryphon.

Although a brocket can have between 1 and 8 tines on his antlers, those of a heraldic stag ‘lodged’—lying down with its head held up—are conventionally thus. ‘Proper’ means ‘of his natural colour’ and ‘gorged’ means ‘around his neck’.
