Joseph Brockett and Emma COTRELL, 1877

Another early settler family was the shoe-making family of Joseph and Emma from Northampton, England. They emigrated to Australia and on to New Zealand.²

5th son of John and Maria DARLING of Northampton, Joseph was baptised 3 May 1833, Bedford St Cuthbert; died New Zealand 1881. In 1853 Joseph was recorded witnessing his elder brother John’s marriage in Northampton. On 28 Oct 1856 “Joseph Brockett, of full age, son of John Brockett, Laborer, married Emma COTRELL, Minor, daughter of John Cotrell, Brass Founder, in the Independent Chapel, Berkhamsted, both residing Berkhamsted, witnesses William Cooper, Martha Cottrell”.³ Berkhamstead is c 25 m S of Bedford and 32 m SSE of Northampton. The age of majority in England then was 21, and it appears that Emma was only 6 weeks short, as suggested by the baptism on 25 Dec 1835 of “Emma, born 15 Nov, daughter of John & Jane Cottrell of Cow Cross Street, Holborn St Sepulchre, City of London, he a Smith & Bell Hanger”.⁴ Later records of Emma’s age from Australasia pointing to a birth in 1837 or 8 were underestimates. According to family tradition Emma’s father John was a wealthy gentleman-owner of a brass and iron foundry and strongly disapproved of Emma’s marriage below her social station to Shoemaker John Brockett, see below.⁵ Emma bore Joseph at least 10 sons and 1 daughter, all but the last of those in Northampton. They were living in Russell St, Northampton when their 1st son Walter was born in Jan 1858. When Alfred was born in Oct 1859 they were living in Arthur St, Kingsthorpe, about a mile north of Northampton. Distant relative Abraham Brocket of Bromham and family had also moved to Northampton by 1873.

Northampton was a centre of the shoe trade, and like his 2 brothers, Joseph was a Shoemaker—1856,⁶ 1858,⁷ 1859 Shoemaker Journeyman,⁸ and by the 1871 census he had become Foreman in a Shoe Factory. He was manager of Messrs Henry Hardy and Co, boot manufacturers in 1874 when son Walter emigrated to New Zealand.⁹

Eldest son Walter was the first in the family to emigrate, aged 16 and for £1—arriving New Zealand 11 March 1874 on the barque Dilharee.¹⁰ He said his parents “were opposed to him going out to a country which they thought was peopled by savages.” A few years later Walter “took a trip back to England, and so impressed his parents with the possibilities of the new land that they returned to New Zealand with him.” Passenger lists of the ‘Earl Dalhousie’ arriving Sydney 7 or 8 May 1877 from London,¹¹ show that the family as a whole emigrated the year after Emma Florence was born in 1876—son George was born in Sydney later in 1877. There are several surviving passenger lists of this trip, but one which looks like an at-the-time list with crew members and simple names of passengers recorded Joseph, Emma, Joseph, Arthur, Ernest and Emma Brockett on one page, and the teenagers Walter, Alfred and Samuel Brockett separately on another page. Two other, more census-like lists, one entitled “as inspected by the Immigration Board 1877” have the whole family together, see below.

Joseph Brockett was residing 553 Bourke St, Surry Hills, Sydney in May 1877.¹² But unclaimed letters for Joseph in Nov 1878,¹³ and for him at address “Wyndham St, Alexandria in Mar 1879 suggest they had left for New Zealand by then.¹⁴ Indeed Joseph Brockett was recorded at “London St, Bingsland, Storekeeper” in 1880-81. Bingsland was in Christchurch, now called Richmond. His qualification to be an elector was residential rather than freehold, which suggests he had been resident for at least three years.¹⁵

Mr Joseph Brockett died 14 Jun 1881 “at his residence, London St, Bingsland, aged 49”, and was buried 16 Jun in Avonside Cemetery.¹⁶ On 21 Jun 1881 Emma Brockett, sole executrix, obtained probate of his Will at Christchurch Supreme Court.¹⁷ Joseph must have made good money as a storekeeper, as after his death wife Emma took 4 of the children—Alfred, Arthur, Ernest and Emma—back to England for a while; they are recorded returning to NZ on the ‘Waimate’ on 6 Nov 1882.¹⁸ Her own parents were deceased but her mother in law Maria Brockett was alive, aged c 77, and no doubt Emma had other relatives and friends to see. In 1885 Emma Brockett was residing 18 Wilmer St, Christchurch, when she issued a wanted notice for who might have “laid poison on her garden”.¹⁹ Emma Brockett died 5 Sep 1887 in Christchurch aged 50 [i.e. b c 1837], “at her son’s residence, 91 East Belt”.²⁰

1871: At 8 Maple St, Northampton St Sepulchre, next door to brother John and mother Maria: Joseph, aged 38, Foreman Shoe Factory, b Bedford; Emma, 33, b Middlesex St Lukes; Walter, 13; Alfred, 11; Samuel—in error for Lemuel—9; Joseph, 5; Arthur, 2—all the children b Northampton and all Scholars except Arthur.
1877—Two similar lists of immigrant families on the ship “Earl Dalhousie” arriving Sydney 7 or 8 May, recorded: Brockett Joseph, aged 43, Bootmaker, native of Bedfordshire, Baptist; Emma, 39 [i.e. b c 1838], native of London, Baptist; Walter, 19; Alfred, 17; Samuel [i.e. Lemuel], 15; Joseph, 10; Arthur, 9; Ernest, 2; Emma, 1; the first 5 able to read and write, Joseph [jun] and Arthur able to read.²¹ Comments: The other list recorded that Emma’s parents were both deceased, that all the family were in a “good state of bodily health, strength and probable usefulness” and that they had “no relations in the Colony” In 1877 therefore 6 sons and 1 daughter were living. All 6 brothers were living in 1899 when daughter Emma died, plus one who had been born since arrival.

Joseph and Emma’s children—13, according to a newspaper article when only 3 were still alive: Walter, and one in Auckland and one in Melbourne:²²

Walter Andrew b 12 Jan 1858, Northampton St Giles.²³ W Brockett was working as a Boot manufacturer at 100 Waterloo St, off Devonshire St [Sydney] in Nov 1877.²⁴ Wise’s Directory 1887-8 Christchurch, NZ, listed him as a Bootmaker in London St, Richmond. The 1893 Christchurch Electoral Roll listed him as a Bootmaker in Richmond. Worked first for Bootmakers Messrs Lightband Allan & Co, Christchurch, retiring for health reasons and then working as custodian of Arthur E G Rhodes’ buildings at the corner of Manchester and Hereford streets.²⁵ In 1898 he filed for divorce in Christchurch High Court against Eliza Brocket and Joseph Garland.²⁶ Residing 23 Gordon Ave, St Albans.²⁷ Probate Christchurch High Court 1947. No issue.
2. Alfred John b 25 Oct 1859, Kingsthorpe, Northampton.²⁸ Occupation 1887, Bootmaker.²⁹ He married 1. 1885 Kate PAYNE, who died 13 Aug 1885 Christchurch, New Zealand, aged 25, and also Lillie Flora, her daughter, aged 26 days.³⁰ He married 2. 26 Dec 1887 Janet Lapsley MCJARROW in Christchurch, NZ. Children:
   1. Frederick Selby b 16 Oct 1893, Christchurch, NZ. In the NZ Defence Force 1914-8.³¹ Brockett descendants now live in New Zealand.

   3. Roy b 1905. Married 20 Jan 1940 Doris Eva BIGELOW. She died 19 Aug 1985 and Roy died 11 May 1986. The last Will of Roy Brockett of 6 Lemington Rd, Westmere, Auckland, Storeman, written 19 Oct 1972, appointed Doris Eva executor, and if she predeceased him, then their daughter. Their daughter proved the Will in Auckland High Court 9 Jul 1986.³²

3. Lemuel b 1862, Bedford District.³⁵ He was more usually called by a second name Charles. “Elemuel Charles Brockett” married 1st 20 Jul 1884 Alice Louisa ROWE, both of Christchurch.³⁶ He married 2nd Mary LOVE 30 March 1901 in Melbourne. “Lemuel Charles Brockett” died 15 Jun 1938, aged 76, Beechworth, Victoria.³⁷ Children:

Joseph Henry b 1866, Northampton District;⁴¹ m Mary Elizabeth … Wise’s Directory 1887-8 Christchurch, NZ, listed him as a Music Teacher at 60 Durham St. Organiser of Brockett’s String Band.⁴² The 1893 Christchurch Electoral Roll listed him as a Bootmaker in Sydnam. He died 1907, listed as a Bootmaker.⁴³
6. Arthur Frederick b 1868, Northampton District.⁴⁴ Lived in New Zealand. Died unmarried 20 Nov 1918 Christchurch, aged 50, probate Christchurch High Court 1918.⁴⁵

   1. Roy George Huia, b 25 Aug 1910, Carl. Married Alma May McMILLAN 1 Jan 1966. Both were school teachers, met in Teachers’ College in 1963. When Roy retired in 1974 he was Principal of a large school (700+ pupils) in Camberwell, Victoria. Both have since died—without children.

      In 1999 Roy kindly provided all the information he knew about the descendants of Joseph and Emma COTTRELL, some in a letter and some in a copy of notes he had compiled for his siblings. Much of it has proved to be correct, although some of what his father Ernest told him about Joseph and Emma may have acquired some embellishment, as oral tradition usually does—Ernest was only 5 when his father died and 13 when his mother died. But it is well worth quoting them as follows:⁵³

      “Dad [Ernest] said that the Cottrells were Huguenots who fled from France to escape religious persecution. … Mr Cotterell owned a brass foundry in London and was wealthy. He employed a tutor and a music teacher to educate Emma at home. Dad said she was a very good singer but being asthmatic she suffered set-backs. She met and fell in love with Joseph Brockett. In spite of parental threats of banishment from the family fold, she refused to break off her relationship with Joseph and went away with him in about 1858. They apparently went to Northampton where the first child was born in 1858. In all of this Emma seems to have displayed a certain strength of character which showed up again in later life. Not long afterwards, according to my father, the young couple journeyed to Brockton, Mass. USA where Alfred John was born. It is here that dates and places become confusing…”

      And from his notes for his siblings:

      “Emma’s father was classed as a gentleman of wealth. Emma was a gentlewoman and had a governess and a music teacher. There was a fire in the Cottrell home. John Brockett was born in Bedford, very slight of build and described as being even-tempered and a ne’er-do-well since he occasionally rode horses as an amateur. Took up trade as a shoemaker. Emma fell in love with Joseph. Married him against parents’ wishes. How did Joseph meet Emma? a) Fire? b) As a shoe maker? c) As the rider of a Cottrell horse? Joseph and Emma had a son Harold?”

      Comments: That Emma’s father owned a brass foundry in London and was wealthy is probably correct. In addition to his occupation on Emma’s baptism record, see above, the London Metropolitan Archives have two records of him taking out insurance with Sun Fire Office: On 18 Jan 1837 John Cottrell, 2 Cow Cross Street Smithfield, smith and bell hanger,⁵⁴ and—presumably also him—on 6 Feb 1839 John Cotterell, 31 King Street Smithfield, smith and bell hanger.⁵⁵ Perhaps this was after the fire that Roy mentioned. That Joseph rode horses as an amateur is a strange comment—who didn’t in those days? And besides, Joseph’s father was an Ostler. That the couple went to Brockton [Boston?], Mass. USA where Alfred John was born isn’t borne out by any records, indeed Alfred John’s birth is recorded in England. Roy’s suggestion that Joseph and Emma had a son Harold also looks incorrect—no records of him have been found in the UK or Australia. However as noted above, the 1924 newspaper report did say that Joseph and Emma had 13 children.

10. Emma Florence b 1876, Northampton District,⁵⁶ the only daughter. Emma Florence Brockett died 4 Apr 1899 in the hospital, aged 23, buried at Purewa, Auckland, NZ.⁵⁷ One newspaper announcement of her death said “Deeply regretted by her brothers Walter, Alfred, Charles, Joseph, Arthur, Ernest and George”.⁵⁸
11. George b 1877, Sydney, Australia.⁵⁹ Played the guitar. He married Alice Ethel BEECHEY 1 Jan 1906 in Hawera, NZ,⁶⁰ when his occupation was Furniture Maker and residence Christchurch, NZ. George died 7 Aug 1911, aged 33–34, buried at Purewa, Auckland, NZ.⁶¹ His death certificate said he lived in New Zealand for 30 years, so he would have been taken there aged 4. His father died that year and his mother died when he was 10. Brockett descendants now live in New Zealand. Children:
    1. Leslie George Patrick b Oct 8 1906 Christchurch.⁶² His father died when he was 4. Emigrated to Canada 1930, but returned. Married Gertrude Mary KANE Dec 27 1947 RC Church, Hastings, NZ, he a Cabinet Maker, she a Nurse.⁶³ He died 23 Jan 1984 Hastings, residence: 816 Ngaio St.⁶⁴ She died Aug 23 1984 Hastings. One of Leslie’s descendants participated in the Broket DNA project. His results and those of 3 other participants revealed that although they came from 4 different Broket clans, they actually belonged to a single Genetic Group—called no.2. This had been suspected but no documentary evidence had been—nor probably will be—found to prove it. But now as a result of this DNA evidence we know for certain that they all descend from a common late 16th C ancestor, and no further evidence is needed.
    2. Nola Leonie b May 30 1908 Christchurch; m Arthur SQUIBBS. She died Dec 20 1997.

Alfred Brockett of Battersea, after 1881

Alfred, b 1858, 2nd son of Solomon and Jane MAY of the Morden clan. He is said to have emigrated to Canada or Australia as a young man and has never been heard of since. Brother of Charles Frederick and Solly.

Isaac Brockett and Clara MAYES of Bromham, 1883

Isaac, b 1856,⁶⁵ bap 1 Feb 1857, Bromham.⁶⁶ Oldest surviving child of Thomas and Mary TEBBUTT of Bromham. Some of the following information is from a 1988 letter from a descendant in Queensland, Australia. Isaac married Clara MAYES of Stagsden in S Kensington, London—where his sister Elizabeth KING lived—27 Aug 1883.⁶⁷ Clara was b 1861. Isaac and Clara emigrated to Australia 1883. Isaac’s occupation: Bullock Teamster, carting wool from the Outback to coastal ports, later an Opal Miner. A daughter was stillborn in 1885 and a son in 1889, Clara dying in childbirth with the son. Surviving child: Jessie Mary, b 1886 Australia. Aged 16 found work in Rockhampton, Queensland, as Companion/Help to an elderly woman. Married at St Mark’s Church, Rockhampton, 6 Sep 1911 George William WORTHINGTON, issue 2 daughters, 4 sons. She died 1963. “She was very religious (Anglican) and didn’t have a sense of humour. She had a hard life looking after her husband, father, two brothers-in-law and other men who worked at the sawmill they ran in the Boyne Valley (West of Gladstone) – as well as five children”.⁶⁸

Isaac died of heart failure and oedema of the lungs in Rockhampton, Queensland, 22 Feb 1936, buried North Rockhampton Cemetery.⁶⁹

Henry George Brockett and Mary PRUTTON, c 1883

5th son of William and Fanny BONNETT of the Mordens Clan, Henry George was born 1853 in Battersea, Surrey,⁷⁰ and died 1929 in Northcote, Victoria, Australia. He married Mary PRUTTON 1875 in Arlesey, Bedfordshire.⁷¹

1881: In Queen Street, Stotfold, Henry G, aged 28, Carpenter, b Battersea, Surrey; wife Mary, 27, b Arlsey, Bedfordshire; son Mark, 4, Scholar, b Battersea; dau Nancy, 2, b Arlsey.

Occupation 1882 Carpenter.⁷² 46 years before his death he emigrated to Tasmania—for 1 year—and then to Australia. He therefore emigrated c 1883. He died in Northcote, Victoria, in 1929 from heart failure, aged 76, residing 271 Mansfield St, occupation Carpenter.⁷³ Children:⁷⁴

Charles Frederick Brockett and Maria LEVITT, 1885

Eldest son of Solomon and Jane MAY of the Morden clan, Charles Frederick was born 5 Feb 1857 in Wandsworth, Surrey,¹⁰⁰ bap 12 Apr St Mary Battersea.¹⁰¹ Brother of Alfred and Edward Solly.¹⁰² Charles was still living with his parents in Stotfold at the 1881 census, Carpenter’s son, unm aged 24.

He married Maria LEVITT 27 Oct 1881 in Arlesey, Bedford.¹⁰³ They migrated to New Zealand in Mar 1885. At that time he was described as a Builder. In 1886, 87, 91 and 92 he was described as a Carpenter.¹⁰⁴ Here is the family c 1902:

Charles became Inspector in the Public Works Dept in New Zealand¹⁰⁵ and Clerk of Works.¹⁰⁶ He oversaw the building of the New Zealand Government House in Wellington 1910.¹⁰⁷ He died overseeing the building of a tourist hotel in the Mt Cook region, aged 55 on 16 Dec 1913 of Renal calculus and abscess 3 years and cardiac failure, at the Raw… Private Hospital, Gloucester Street, Christchurch, from Mt Cook, New Zealand, buried at Karori cemetery by an Anglican minister.¹⁰⁸ He had 4 sons living aged 30, 26, 23 and 21 and one daughter aged 28.¹⁰⁹ There is a picture of Dorothy in 1945, so daughter Bertha must have died before 1913. In 1916 Maria resided 26 Hawkestone St, Wellington.¹¹⁰ Children:

1. Frederick Charles, born 27 Oct 1882 in Stotfold, Beds,¹¹¹ and died 30 Mar 1956. He married Margaret Elizabeth COULTER 1 Jan 1908. Frederick was a Schoolteacher specialising in Agriculture and he was a keen Tramper, Botanist and Photographer. Mt Brockett, a peak in the Tarurua Ranges north of Wellington is named after him.¹¹² There is a fairly large collection of Fred’s photographs in the NZ National Archives. Of particular note are his photos of the aftermath of the Napier earthquake in 1931.¹¹³ He had a near-namesake distant cousin, Charles Frederick Brockett, b 1895, who married Grace CLOW. Children:
   1. Freda Margaret, b 1909. Married Roy SANDERS, Orchardist. 3 sons, 4 daus.
   2. Edna Dorothy, b 1911. Karitane Nurse. Married c 1942 Selwyn David THOMPSON, Farmer. 3 sons, 1 dau.
   3. Esme Enid, b 1913. Married 1937 Gordon Stuart HARRIS, Botanist. 1 son, 1 dau.
2. Dorothy Mary, b 15 Jan 1884, Stotfold, Beds; m John SULLIVAN, Accountant. 1 dau.
3. Arthur Ernest, born 23 Mar 1886 Tory Place, Wellington, NZ.¹¹⁴ He married Sylvia Margaret FELL, daughter of Chas Yates FELL, Barrister, 20 Dec 1916 in the Private Chapel, Bishopdale, Nelson (just across the water from Wellington), he aged 30, Bachelor, Teacher, she aged 28, Spinster, witness Percy Cecil Brockett.¹¹⁵ He and Sylvia, who was an accomplished water=colourist, spent much of their life near the mountains of the upper South Island. Children:
   1. Charles Stephen, or Steve, b 3 Aug 1918; d Dec 1978. Stephen was a talented climber who climbed a few times with Edmund (later Sir Edmund) Hillary of Mt Everest fame. He trained and worked as a Schoolteacher until WWII. In Dec 1940 he joined the Fleet Air Arm and trained at Gosport in the UK Feb-Jun 1941.¹¹⁶ This picture was taken when he got his wings that year:¹¹⁷

      After the war he obtained a BA from Canterbury University College, followed by an MA. He became a Training College Lecturer and Dean of the Secondary Teacher Training College, Auckland. He was also, at one stage, Principal of the Nasinu Training College, Fiji. At the age of 60, just as he had reached his retirement he died suddenly in his sleep from an aneurism. Married 1949, 1 son, 1 daughter.
   2. Celia Dorothy Edith Brockett, b 1920. Died 9 Aug 1946—according to the Coroner from ‘Acute oedema of the brain, consequent on an acute toxic myocarditis due to a most acute and extremely toxic bronchopneumonia’—at the Mental Hospital, Porirua, from Martin St, Upper Hutt, Wellington, aged 24, Spinster, buried at Karori cemetery by an Anglican minister.¹¹⁸
4. Bertha Alice, born 22 Dec 1887 in Drummond St, Wellington, NZ.¹¹⁹ She died aged 5 months.
5. Percy Cecil, born 16 Jun 1890 in Carrington St, Wellington, NZ;¹²⁰ died 14 Dec 1962. He married Margaret Elizabeth FRASER 29 Dec 1920 in St Stephen’s Church, Auckland. He played the violin in an amateur orchestra in Wellington before WWI. He was rejected for the army but after his younger brother was killed he tried again and was accepted. He was sent overseas and while in London he met Margaret Fraser, a Scotswoman who was working in London in a charitable crèche. She followed him to New Zealand and they were married. They lived in Mt Albert, Auckland. After the war he completed his accountancy and specialised in accounting for legal practices, working for law firms in Auckland for many years. At one stage he wrote and had published short stories. He kept his interest in music, although as a listener rather than performer, was a wide-ranging reader with an eclectic library, had an intensive knowledge of the native flora, and enjoyed walking and tramping until his death from cancer. Margaret was very active in local affairs taking a special interest in causes which benefited children. Children:

6. Archibald “Archie” Geoffrey, b 7 Jan 1892, Carrington St, Wellington, NZ;¹²¹ killed 15 Jul 1916, Armentieres, France.¹²² A law student at Victoria University College in Wellington when World War I broke out. He seems to have enlisted immediately and was a member of the force which occupied German Samoa. He caught pneumonia there and was invalided out of the army. He re-enlisted, became a Lieutenant, was sent overseas and was killed on the Somme trying to bring back wounded men from a sortie which had taken place the previous night.
   Second Lieutenant, IO/3151, 1st Bn, Otago Regiment, NZEF died on Saturday, 15 Jul 1916. Son of Mrs M Brockett, of 26, Hawkestone St, Wellington, New Zealand.¹²³
